borrow a book the other day the world of super thick masterpiece a tale of two cities, took a few chapters later, i also decide it, really boring, and dont understand, today i borrowed it to lose weight, managed to finish it. characters in the book a lot, but the characters of all kinds of relationship and then to my unexpected, the protagonist is a former prisoners in the bastille for 18 years horse nate doctor, her daughter, lucy, and his son charles...

britain and france is known as the twins, the background of the novel, that is, the french revolution, i learn history, about the french revolution was clear to me, to contact in the novel, i really want to ask, is that true? novel, mostly fiction, look after, gave me the impression is: the vicious wisely hot lady, innocent charles, have nothing to say in the west, better ` cardan sir, faithful maid miss pross, warm-hearted mr jarvis ` laurie...

i am a good man always has a good will, for the bad guys always have a feeling of disgust, not surprisingly, everyone like this, unless he is a good man, to bad people with kindness heart, or that he is a super big, bad, the good person always have a feeling that "they good false!" in fact, this is not strange, the fact is so! a bunch of hypocrites. well thermal couple to find lucy, thought to help her husband charles, was hurt her husband in prison again, and eventually lead to the death of mr cardan. i think mr cardan very handout spirit, heavy sentiment, the first time he saw lucy he fell in love with her, although the profession was rejected, but still cant change love for her, and finally to lucy and her husband together, in order to lucy is no longer sad tears, he went to prison and charles switched, changed lucys happiness with his own life, he couldnt help but feel what touched me most is a character.

after reading the masterpiece, wuthering heights, gave me a kind of depression and made me unable to understand what is love on earth. everyone who read it would be touched and moved.

according to his novel we can get conclusion that in material desires dominate society. money is everything. there are no love friendship and relationship between people.

this novel also reflected that what kind of social background the author suffered.anyways, wuthering heights gave me a torment, you cant see any warm scene in the book, all you see is the fierce wind howled, and wild moor. however, at the end, the combination between hareton and cathy seems a hopeful light in the darkness, and the break of the day finally coming!

many times in life, people leave our lives and then come back into them. however, we remember them, but they do not remember us. the same thing happened in emily bronts book wuthering heights. linton, taken by his mother to london after his birth, never knew his father, then when things happened, he came back home. he had family fighting over where he was to live and whom he would be around. not knowing part of your family until after you are fifteen is hard.

isabella took her son, after he was born, and moved to london away from thrushcross grange. at the same time, she moved away from her husband, heathcliff. during the time that isabella and linton were gone, isabella got sick and passed away. right before her death, a letter came saying that she was dying so hindley went to visit her. while he was there, she did passed on so he brought linton back with him. once back, everyone looked after him and made him feel at home.

heathcliff soon came to the knowledge that his son had returned to wuthering heights. he then sent someone to wuthering heights to get linton. however, he did not know that linton was already asleep so he did not get the boy that night. the next day the boy was taken to heathcliff at thrushcross grange. the father and son were nothing alike, and linton was intimidated by his father. he did stay, and meet some of his relatives that he had never seen, who helped him adjust to living there.

everyday in our lives we run into situations that we wish we had never been involved with. i relate to the characters of linton and heathcliff. i am like linton because people know who i am, but i never remember meeting them, and am scared around them. i also feel the same as hindly might have of. this is because i would want to see the person i did not know, but then i would not know how to cat around them. in time people come around, but others, as with heathcliff and linton, never come around. everyday life is something we take for granted. no matter how you feel, you may never come to understand it, till you find someone else in the same situation. the above described situation only gives one instance of the many situations in emily bronts book, wuthering heights, were you could relate your life to someone else wuthering heights s. this book gives the true facts about what family life is really like. anyway, its worth reading .

recently, i have finished reading great expectations, which is widely considered as the

masterpiece of dickens. the historic background of this book is victorian period which was the time when british was governed by queen victoria. the hero of the book is pip, who was living in a blacksmith family. someday, he met magwitch, who was a convict, and he helped him. to show his gratitude, magwitch gave pip a good fortune and pip led a totally different life after he got the money. however, pip lost all of his money and fame because of his enemies’ plot at the last and become ordinary people at the last.

dickens is famous for his novel such as great expectations, the tale of two cities, oliver twist and so on. he always creates some people in lower class and show their different qualities. in great expectations, he tried to show us the conflict between different classes in victorian

period by telling us the story of pip. after pip got the money, he left his friends and family to city, and then he learned to raise his social state. however, he was a child born in a blacksmith family and there’s a wide gap between him and the upper class. finally, he lost all of his great

expectations and went back to his hometown as ordinary people. fortunately, he met his lover, estella, in satis house and they left there together at the end of the story.

in the book, my favorite character is joe, pip’s brother in law. he was a blacksmith and belonged to the lower social class. however, he possessed some good qualities that made him noble. for example, though joe didn’t know any word, he thought highly of pip when pip tried to write him a letter. what’s more, pip’s sister always considered pip as the burden of their family but joe always believed that his brother can become successful. no matter how unkindly he was treated, joe was always family to others. undoubtedly, it’s joe’s noble quality that prevents pip from becoming someone snobbish.

in my opinion, the story of pip is really attractive while the writing style is also special. for example, dickens used simile and metaphor for many times in his book. when joe visited pip, dickens wrote that joe had taken his hat as a bird’s nest with egg in. i think it’s hard to show the inner world of characters as well as feeling because those things are really abstract. on the other hand, if we write it directly, that may be boring and childish. and by using simile, dickens transforms the abstract feeling into visual language, with which we can use our imagination to enjoy the story much more easily. i think that we can also make good use of dickens’s outstanding skills to improve our writing.

after reading “great expectations”, many people complained that the class difference will always result in tragedy and they think that we should try to destroy those barriers. however, i think the massage that dickens wants to deliver is that we should always be friendly,

warm-hearted and optimistic. with these qualities, we can always lead a happy and comfortable life like joe even though we don’t have much money.

my opinions about a tale of two cities

a tale of two cities was written by charles dickens, who was born in portsmouth, england in 1812. as the second of eight children, dickens had to go to work at the age of twelve to support his poor family, and he lived a difficult childhood. this troublesome time scarred him deeply and provided him with substantial material for such stories as oliver twist, david copperfield, and great expectations. though just accepted only little education, dickens became a famous writer through his struggling self-learning and extremely hard work, and he was the representative writer of realism in the 19th century.

charles dickens lived in the period of transition between feudalism and capitalism, when the industrial revolution originated in england swept through europe. as large numbers of workers invaded into urban centers to earn a living, the bourgeois took advantages of the surplus of labor by keeping wages low. the poor thus remained poor, and often lived in a narrow and filthy environment. dickens’ writing depicted various directions about this society, and provided a keen, sympathetic chronicle of the plight of the urban poor.

a tale of two cities mainly about the great atrocities of french aristocrats compelled the poor citizens to resist violently. doctor manette spent eighteen years as a prisoner in bastille because he intended to expose the atrocity after learning that

marquis evrémonde killed a beautiful farmwife and her younger brother because of his brother’s lust. after doctor manette was free again, his daughter lucie got married with charles darnay, marquis evrémonde’s nephew, but chose to live in england because he could not accept the cruel injustices of the french social system and the snobbish and cruel values of his uncle. however, marquis evrémonde continued his atrocities. after his crazy carriage crushed over a farmer’s little baby as if nothing happen, he was killed at night. a revolutionary storm was brewing. mr. and mrs.defarge were the revolutionaries in the poor saint antoine section of paris. they wanted to kill all french aristocrats, including charles darnay. mr.defarge used to be doctor manette’s servant, so he was kind to manettes, while his wife’s heart burned with longing for revenge. at last, charles darnay was judged to death, but sydney carton, a lawyer who loved lucie deeply, willing to die instead of darnay, as they had similar appearance.

from my personal point of view, the person a tale of two cities described astounded me very much. some of them were cruel, crazy and reasonless, while some of them were kind, moral and had own mind.

sydney carton was the person i thought the most. he was a smart attorney, without his help, mr. stryver could not solve any cases. but he was lazy, alcoholic, and cared nothing and nobody, he even could not find any interests in his own life, it seems that he lived just for wasting life. but he loved lucie deeply. finally, he

became a hero, because he sacrificed his life to save darnay. i didn’t know why the author spent so many words to form such a strange guy at frist, he used his life to love lucie, after all. but now, i caught it. perhaps the terrible carton symbolized the terrible old france, and his change in the end shown that everything could change, including the old france, a new and fine society would replace the violence.

then, charles darnay. he was worthy of esteem or respect. he displayed great virtue in his rejection of his uncle, marquis evrémonde. money and power meant nothing to him, if they came from exploitation and oppression. even though he had to inherit his uncle’s bequest, he left them to the poor and lived in london throught his own effort. when he realized that he must go back to paris to help gabelle, one of his servants, and make right the wrong his uncle had done, he acted without hesitation because he knew that was his duty. he even refused carton’s help after he was judged to death. i thought, charles darnay was a shiny diamond in that cruel and violent society, and he was a hope, the hope of equality and peace.

third, mrs.defarge. how crazy this woman was. nobody could stop her steps toward revenge, except the death. although it said that wherever there is oppression, there is resistance, i didn’t agree with mrs.defarge totally. her resistance was inhumane, insensible and endless. for just as the aristocracy’s oppression had made an oppressor mrs.defarge herself, so will her oppression, in turn, make oppressors her victims. in the end of the novel, her death by a bullet from her own gun. it shown the

author’s belief that inordinate retaliated lust would destroy one own self.

on the whole, a tale of two cities is a successful novel. it shows us oppression and resistance, violence and terror, revolution and vengeance, love and friendship.

i am lucky enough to live in the 21st century, when peace and development are pursued all along. nowadays, there also are many problems and dissensions among this world, but violence does not the best way problems are solved. violence just creates more problems, something every sensible person knows. what we need are talks and communication. the time a tale of two cities mentions has gone, we should do enough preparation to adapt the coming age.

during the last month, i have been reading the novel named great expectations by charles dickens. i set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that i have read the chinese version of this great novel and i was deeply attracted by the story.

the main character in this novel is pip and the whole story goes like this: pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”。 his sister mrs. joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. as a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. since pip was asked to visit miss havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. in miss havishams’s home, pip saw her adopted daughter estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl estella. and much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. after a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. however, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. he felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. what’s worse, the criminal magwitch escaped from prison to visit pip and was noticed by the police. at last, magwitch was sentenced to death and pip led a normal life. the beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. but pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. this ending is a bit reaasuring.

among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is magwitch. he was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. no one cared about him, so when little pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. and he bore pip’s help in his mind. when he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help pip become a gentleman. he worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to pip. he did all of these secretly in order to prevent little pip from being embarrassed. after pip became a real gentleman, magwitch returned to england in secret only to see whether pip had led a good life. what we can find from him is deep love for pip. although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. different from miss havishams who is black-hearted, magwitch is like a father. he showed his love to pip without any hesitation. he was just like pip’s father. this is why i admire him very much.

then when i look back into our society, i find that some parents are not as good as the criminal magwitch. cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. this usually leads to two consequences. one is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. the other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. they lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. in other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.

god is equal to everyone. when magwitch knew that estella was his daughter and had been loved by pip, he felt relieved. i am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.

the view of pride and prejudice

pride and prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time。 it describes a love story mainly between elisabeth, who i like the best, and a rich and proud man, darcy。

the story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the ben。 in a ball, elisabeth gave such a bad impression on darcy's first pride that she refused darcy's first proposal。 darcy was so surprised by elisabeth's refusal that he loved elisabeth more deeply。 and elisabeth's antipathy(厌恶,憎恨) made darcy realize his shortings。 he was not angry about elisabeth's censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude。 during elisabeth's travel in darcy's manor(庄园)。 darcy was very nice to her uncle and aunt, different from previous proud attitude。 when one of elisabeth's sisters ran away with wickham, darcy helped elisabeth find her sister and prevent her sister from the loss of reputation, with nobody knowing that it was he who helped the ben。 so many changes in darcy eliminated(消除) elisabeth's prejudice。 at last it end with their marriage。

taking the daily life as its material, this story reflected the life and love in a conservative你(保守派) and blocking england town。 it reflected the author's view about marriage that it is fault to marry for property, money and status and it is also foolish to take these elements into account。 in fact darcy's pride manifested(证明) the gap (间隙,差距)between their statuses(地位)。 since his pride existed, there is no ideal marriage between elisabeth and darcy。 from the different attitudes from darcy's two proposals, it reflected the feminine(女性) pursuit of personality independence and right equality, which is a progressive(先进的) character from the image of elisabeth。
